Large critical infrastructure surveillance such as high-speed rail lines, oil pipelines, borders, etc., is an extremely difficult task for which the use of traditional technologies, such as movement sensors and video surveillance, is frequently unmanageable and impractical due to cost. SACOH project suggests using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) for surveillance over fiber optics. This has the major benefit of enabling the surveillance of areas longer than 100 km with single sensor equipment, which will lower costs and simplify the surveillance system. To achieve this, the use of coherent optical time domain reflectometry, also known as Phase-OTDR or COTDR, is suggested. Various hardware, processing, and architectural techniques will be applied to this technique to enhance its performance beyond the state of the art.
The primary goal of this project is to develop a distributed acoustic sensor prototype for optical fiber that can detect foot intruders near the sensing fiber and has a maximum range of over 100 km.
